Why Grind?

Don’t Just Remove the Tree — Remove the Stump

Leaving a stump behind is a common mistake. What looks like a minor eyesore quickly becomes a trip hazard, a pest magnet, and a sprout factory. Tree stumps also decay slowly — taking 10 to 20 years to fully decompose while hosting termites, fungi, and carpenter ants the entire time.

Stump grinding is the fastest, most cost-effective solution. Our commercial grinder chews the stump down 6–12 inches below grade in a single session, leaving only wood chips that can be used as mulch or hauled away.

Eliminates Trip Hazards
Stumps are invisible underfoot in tall grass, especially dangerous for children and guests. Grinding removes the hazard permanently.
Stops New Sprouts
Many trees resprout aggressively from stumps for years. Grinding below grade kills the root system and stops regrowth for good.
Removes Pest Habitat
Rotting stumps attract termites, carpenter ants, beetles, and fungi — all of which can spread to your home and healthy trees nearby.
Reclaims Usable Space
Once a stump is ground out, that space becomes available for a garden bed, new plantings, a patio, lawn, or whatever you have planned.
Reasons to Grind

6 Problems Left Behind by an Old Stump

Stumps seem harmless, but the longer they sit, the more trouble they cause.

01
Major Nuisance
Continuous Sprouting
Maple, oak, and cherry stumps send up shoots for years — sometimes dozens at a time — that are expensive to repeatedly control.
02
Pest Risk
Termite & Carpenter Ant Colony
Soft, decaying wood is prime habitat. Once established, insects can spread to your home’s structural wood.
03
Ongoing Hassle
Lawn Mower Damage
Clipping a hidden or partially hidden stump with a mower blade is expensive. It also forces you to mow around it indefinitely.
04
Tree Health
Fungal Disease Spread
Root rot and fungal pathogens living in old stumps can spread through soil to adjacent healthy trees.
05
Aesthetic
Wasted Yard Space
Even a 12-inch stump takes up meaningful space — and with a root flare, the unusable radius is much larger.
06
Curb Appeal
Reduced Property Value
Stumps signal neglect to buyers. A freshly ground stump with fresh topsoil and grass seed tells a different story.
Our Process

What to Expect From Start to Finish

Every job follows the same professional process — transparent, efficient, and clean.

1
Assessment & Utility Marking
We assess stump diameter, root spread, and proximity to utilities. You’ll need to mark your utilities (via Miss Utility) before grinding begins — we’ll remind you.
  • Miss Utility 811 call recommended
  • Depth discussed based on intended use
  • Estimate provided upfront
2
Setup & Safety
The area around the stump is cleared of rocks, debris, and landscape edging. Our grinder guard and operator position prevent chip scatter from reaching nearby structures.
  • Debris zone established
  • Landscape fabric, edging, & sprinkler heads protected
  • Chip deflector positioned correctly
3
Grinding
The carbide-tipped grinding wheel works across the stump in overlapping passes, descending 6–12 inches below grade. Root flares are also ground where possible.
  • Typical 12-inch stump: 15–30 minutes
  • Chips created are 100% biodegradable
  • Depth customized to your plans
4
Cleanup & Filling
Chips are raked away from the cavity. You can keep them as mulch, or we haul them. The hole is filled with remaining chips and topsoil, tamped, and leveled.
  • Hole filled & leveled
  • Chips available to keep as free mulch
  • Can add topsoil & grass seed for extra fee

Standard depth is 6–10 inches below grade, which is sufficient to allow lawn mowing, landscaping, and most planting over the area. If you’re pouring a concrete pad or building a structure, we can grind deeper — just let us know in advance.
The grinding process creates a significant volume of wood chips. You can keep them as free mulch for garden beds (they’re excellent for moisture retention), or we haul them away as part of our cleanup. Either way, the cavity is filled and leveled.
No. Grinding the stump below grade severs the connection between remaining roots and any stored energy. While surface roots may have some residual sprouting ability, grinding eliminates regrowth from the stump itself. For aggressive sprouters (like tree of heaven or black locust), we can treat roots with a growth inhibitor.
Yes — we strongly recommend calling 811 (Miss Utility) at least 3 business days before your grinding appointment. This is a free service that marks underground gas, electric, water, and cable lines near the stump. This protects both you and our equipment.
Yes. Our equipment can work in tight spaces. Very close stumps (within 1–2 feet of a structure) may require hand tools for the final passes, but we routinely handle stumps adjacent to fences, walls, and patios.
